What’s wrong with the eyelids constantly jumping?

The constant fluttering of the eyelids is clinically known as blepharospasm. This is an unexplained spasm of the muscles in the innervated area of the facial nerve. It is often seen in middle-aged and elderly people, but in recent years, many younger patients are often encountered in the clinic. There are many causes of blepharospasm, but in most patients, it is related to lack of sleep and visual fatigue caused by long hours of playing with cell phones and computers. In some patients, it may be caused by irritating eye diseases, such as impingement, foreign body irritation, and so on. In some cases, it may be caused by mental factors, such as overexcitement or stress. Clinically, it is characterized by paroxysmal involuntary and frequent small spasms of the orbicularis oculi muscle that do not interfere with the ability to open and close the eyes. If severe blepharospasm is present, it may lead to difficulty in opening the eyes, a condition that requires exclusion of facial muscle spasm. A visit to a neurologist is required. In general, it is advisable to consider resting, getting enough sleep, and staying away from electronic products, so that if the symptoms are mild, they may get better on their own. If it does not improve, you need to go to the hospital and consider acupuncture treatment or medication. For severe patients, consider Botulinum toxin A small dose injection.
