Chickenpox occurs frequently mainly in infants and children, and is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Chickenpox is self-healing and may resolve slowly on its own with good treatment. However, it is important to note that chickenpox is highly contagious and can be transmitted to other people after it occurs, but the infection disappears when the chickenpox scabs over. The current treatment for chicken pox consists of symptomatic treatment. If the skin itching is intense, you can take oral antihistamines. If the herpes of chicken pox is not broken, you can apply a lotion of calomel to stop the itching. If you scratch because of excessive itching and the blisters rupture, you must apply antibiotic ointment. Patients with chickenpox who have fever can be given antipyretic medication during the high fever period.
