Which obese patients are suitable for weight loss surgery?

It is often said that “the heart is wide and the body is fat”, but in reality, there are very few fat people who are truly happy. Obesity not only makes them less socially acceptable, but also causes a series of physical and psychological problems. 11 May is the World Obesity Day set by the World Health Organization. Obesity has been identified by the World Health Organization as one of the top 10 chronic diseases. The latest data show that the world’s overweight population has reached 1 billion, obese population of 300 million, at least 2.6 million people die every year because of this. Moreover, overweight and obesity has long been not the “patent” of developed countries, has spread to all continents, as if it has become a major threat to human health. Case sharing: At the age of 30, he felt that a 1 meter 8 man who drinks beer and eats barbecue every day is no big deal, but at the age of 40, his weight reached 240 pounds, which seriously affected his normal life. According to his own description, at that time he climbed the stairs can be panting, dripping with sweat, sitting at the bus stop are tired, every time you squat and then stand up will be dizzy for a long time. After going to the hospital, it was discovered that because of excessive obesity, he suffered from severe fatty liver and diabetes, and his knee joints were damaged because they could not bear the excessive weight, and he also grew bone spurs. From then on, he needed insulin injections every day, and said goodbye to barbecue and beer completely. But even so, he couldn’t lose the weight. Later, he was introduced to Meng Hua’s office in the general surgery department of Beijing Friendship Hospital. After a detailed examination, the specialist told him that he was morbidly obese and that it was difficult to achieve weight loss with ordinary fitness methods, and suggested that he should have gastric bypass surgery to reduce his weight. Less than a year after receiving the surgery, Mr. Zhao’s weight dropped to 158 pounds and his waist circumference was reduced to 2 feet 6 inches, and his beer belly was gone. His daughter-in-law complimented him, saying that his husband looked 20 years younger and had become “fresh meat”. What’s more, his years of diabetes has also greatly improved, and now not only does he not need to take insulin, he can also eat and drink normally. In recent years, with the improvement of the national standard of living, obesity is an explosive growth, there are about 43.6% of obese people in China, that is, 600 million Chinese people overweight or obese. Obesity has become a major problem in the country. Obesity is not only unattractive in appearance, but also causes related health problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular problems, fatty liver, osteoarthritis, respiratory sleep apnea, etc., leading to a serious decline in the quality of life of patients, and in serious cases, affecting life expectancy and causing serious adverse effects on patients’ families. Bariatric surgery is an effective means of making obese patients beautiful and healthy, but not in the ordinary sense of losing weight. For those who perform this surgery, doctors conduct a rigorous screening process, which is quantified by the fact that the obese patient is clearly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and has a body mass index (BMI) > 27.5 kg/m2, is between 16 and 65 years of age, and has had the disease for no more than 15 years. These conditions are met before weight loss surgery can be considered. Surgery is preferred for diabetic patients with BMI >32.5 kg/m2, while obese patients with BMI >35 kg/m2 should be treated aggressively with surgery regardless of whether they have comorbid diabetes. Simple slimming for non-obese people does not require surgery, and attention should be paid to lifestyle changes. Eat less, exercise more, aerobic exercise is recognized as the best way to lose weight in a healthy way. In recent years, more and more severely obese patients have undergone bariatric surgery and achieved good weight loss results, while also effectively improving the co-existing disorders of glucose metabolism in most patients. Experts pointed out that there are two kinds of weight loss surgery most commonly used in China, one is sleeve gastric surgery, as the saying goes, “the stomach becomes smaller”; one is gastric bypass surgery, that is, the stomach becomes smaller at the same time “absorption less”, according to the different degrees of obesity and individual differences. Depending on the degree of obesity and individual differences, patients can choose the best surgery for themselves on the basis of consultation with their doctors.
