The 7th International Conference on Auditory Neuroma has been held in Shanghai from April 12 to April 15, 2015. The International Conference on Auditory Neuroma, jointly organized by otologists and neurosurgeons, is the world’s highest level conference on basic research and clinical treatment of auditory neuroma and lateral skull base surgery. It is held every four years and, like the Olympic Games, the host country is elected in several candidate countries. The current conference was held in China for the first time and was organized by the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, with Professor Wu Hao as the chairman. More than 500 delegates from more than 30 countries and regions attended the congress. During the 3 days of intense and enthusiastic academic atmosphere, hot topics on the pathogenesis of auditory neuroma and lateral skull base tumor-related diseases, the latest treatment strategies, surgical techniques, facial nerve function preservation, auditory function preservation and reconstruction, postoperative patient rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life were fully discussed. Prof. Brackmann from House-Clinic Center in the United States presented his insights on the current treatment strategy of auditory neuroma, and Prof. Samii from German Neurosurgery and Prof. Sanna from Italian Otology introduced their respective experience in treating 4000 cases of auditory neuroma, and currently the 2 professors are the most experienced surgeons in the world in treating auditory neuroma surgery. Several experts at the conference also reported the latest progress in preserving the function of the facial auditory nerve in auditory neuroma, auditory brainstem implantation and the experience of drug treatment for type II neurofibromatosis. In China, Prof. Wu Hao and Prof. Han Dongyi of otology, Prof. Tension Wei and Prof. Mao Ying of neurosurgery reported the current status of auditory neuroma treatment in China. Prof. Chunjiang Yu was invited to be the moderator of the conference, and Dr. Mingshan Zhang presented a paper entitled “The relationship between the morphology of the internal auditory canal and preoperative hearing in small auditory neuroma”. It is a reflection of the fact that the treatment of auditory neuroma in our hospital occupies an important place in the international and domestic arenas. The quality and quantity of auditory neuroma surgery has increased significantly compared to that of 10 years ago, and more and more units are performing auditory neuroma surgery. At present, the better units in domestic otology for the treatment of auditory neuroma and lateral skull base are Shanghai Xinhua Hospital, Beijing 301 Hospital, etc., and neurosurgery is Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Beijing Sanbo Brain Hospital, 301 Hospital, Shanghai Huashan Hospital, etc. However, through this congress, we also saw the shortcomings of the treatment level of auditory neuroma in China, mainly the auditory brainstem implantation is still blank in China, and only 1-2 people are doing research on drug treatment in China, and there are irregularities in the surgical treatment of auditory neuroma in individual units, etc. However, through this conference, we can promote the further improvement of the treatment level of auditory neuroma in China.
