What is wine? It is probably familiar to everyone. Wine is one of the common drinks in our daily life, but how much do people really know about it? In China, wine culture is a never-ending topic. Friends gathering, New Year’s Eve, wedding and funeral, opening celebrations and so on are inseparable from the wine. As the saying goes: “No wine is not a banquet”, which is the best interpretation of China’s wine culture, it can be seen that drinking is a relatively common habit of life and social customs. Usually, among adults, 5% of those who do not drink alcohol in their lifetime, 80% of those who drink alcohol only on specific occasions, 10% of those who drink alcohol in a harmful way, and 5% of those who are truly alcohol dependent. However, a one-time overdose of alcohol can lead to acute alcoholism; if the average amount of alcohol consumed over a long period of time exceeds the accepted safety limits, it certainly increases the risk of harmful consequences, which we call “hazardous drinking”, even though there are no current illnesses. Excessive drinking is called “harmful drinking” if it has caused physical or mental damage and has brought about adverse social consequences. Alcohol can cause damage to the body, such as alcoholic cirrhosis, neuritis, etc. Alcohol is also known as a psychoactive substance, which can cause alcoholic psychiatric disorders, such as alcohol dependence, hallucinations, delusions, cognitive impairment, and personality changes. If the time and amount of alcohol consumption reach a certain level, so that the drinker cannot control his or her drinking behavior, and the symptoms of physical tolerance or withdrawal appear, it is called “alcohol dependence”. The first step in treatment is to clarify the diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment according to the condition. For example, detoxification treatment, psychological rehabilitation treatment and, if necessary, symptomatic treatment with antipsychotic drugs may be given. Usually, patients need to be sent to hospital for treatment.
