Salicylic acid powder encapsulation combined with CO2 laser treatment of plantar warts, how effective

Plantar warts are a common disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and are treated with numerous methods, including systemic application of immunomodulatory drugs as well as electrocautery, cryotherapy, and laser therapy. However, there are many factors to consider when choosing a treatment method, including patient response, cost of the therapy, success rate, convenience, and side effects. And, patients prefer treatments that have low recurrence rates, brief discomfort, and avoidance of bacterial infections. The key to curing plantar warts is to completely remove the cells containing HPV particles. When the CO2 laser alone is used to treat plantar warts, the CO2 laser causes ablation and vaporization of the tissue, quickly removing the wart without bleeding and removing the cells containing HPV particles. Previous studies have shown cure rates from 45% to 90% with the CO2 laser method. However, due to the thick cuticle of plantar warts, the size and depth of the wart cannot be determined, making treatment more difficult: treating too large or too deep increases the difficulty of wound healing, the possibility of wound infection and scar formation; treating too small or too shallow increases the rate of recurrence in situ. The local action of salicylic acid is keratolytic, used as a keratinizing agent, which can have different pharmacological effects depending on the concentration of the preparation. It can remove the hypertrophic callus, soften the wart, make it fall off and heal. Previous studies have shown that the healing rate of salicylic acid therapy ranges from 14% to 68%, which may be related to ethnicity. But according to our clinical practice found that a single salicylic acid powder sealing treatment a wart clearance rate of only about 10%, generally need 5 to 8 times to cure, this process often need to change the medicine 3 to 5 months, especially to the 3rd to 4th dressing, because the drug corrosion deeper, we added a certain amount of ice chips to play an analgesic effect, but patients still feel pain greater, so the use of salicylic acid single therapy time consuming, pain Therefore, the use of salicylic acid monotherapy is time-consuming, painful and affects the patient’s study and work. The advantages of using salicylic acid powder in combination with CO2 laser to treat plantar warts are twofold. First, the use of salicylic acid powder to remove the thick callus on the surface of plantar warts, while softening, dissipating part of the wart or facilitate the scraping of the wart, and then using the CO2 laser to treat the residual warts at the bottom, which takes less time, can be more effective in removing HPV particles, reduce recurrence, so as to achieve more satisfactory results; second, the patient is less painful, resulting in less trauma. The second is that the patient is less painful and the resulting trauma is smaller, which can shorten the healing time and also reduce the occurrence of trauma infection and other adverse reactions.
