Iodine-131 has been used for 50 years to treat hyperthyroidism with significant efficacy. In general, it takes 2-3 weeks after oral administration of iodine-131 for the effects to appear gradually, with most patients showing gradual improvement in symptoms within 1-3 months after treatment and total disappearance of symptoms within 3 months to 1 year.
