How effective is the treatment of hyperthyroidism with Iodine-131?

Iodine-131 has been used for 50 years to treat hyperthyroidism with significant efficacy. In general, it takes 2-3 weeks after oral administration of iodine-131 for the effects to appear gradually, with most patients showing gradual improvement in symptoms within 1-3 months after treatment and total disappearance of symptoms within 3 months to 1 year. Only a few patients may have some symptoms that last longer or require repeat treatment. Due to the differences in treatment targets and treatment methods in different hospitals in China and abroad. However, most patients can obtain a cure after one course of treatment, and the recurrence rate is relatively low. After iodine-131 treatment, the original enlarged thyroid gland usually shrinks, weight increases, and the original hyperthyroid symptoms such as panic, excessive sweating, and weakness begin to decrease, but it takes some time for the symptoms to ease and disappear. If hematological indicators suggest that the condition is in significant remission, there may be no intervention and the condition will gradually resolve. Some physicians may consider low-dose anti-thyroid medications or some symptomatic medications or herbal remedies to control their symptoms and promote improvement. If the thyroid gland does not shrink or continues to increase in size and clinical symptoms are still evident, the next course of treatment may be administered 3-6 months after the first course of treatment or as determined by the condition. Very few patients are completely cured after four to five treatments. Of course too much treatment tends to trigger hypothyroidism.
