Scarlet fever is an acute respiratory infection caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, which is mostly spread by respiratory droplets. The main source of infection is the carrier of group A beta-hemolytic streptococci and patients with scarlet fever. The bacteria are mainly spread by airborne droplets, but in a few cases they can be transmitted through close contact, skin wounds and the birth canal. Early treatment with antibiotic drugs can shorten the course of the disease and reduce complications.
