Nail infections are often caused by small puncture wounds, contusions, barbs (reverse stripping) or infection with pathogenic bacteria after cutting the nail too deeply. The tissue structure of the finger is dense and the infection results in high tension within the tissue and pressure on the nerve endings, hence the swelling and pain.
