Pigmented nevi, commonly known as “nevus”, mostly appear black-brown, a few are white, cyan and other colors, and there can be hair growth on the surface. Most of them grow slowly or last for many years without any change, but they rarely degenerate or disappear spontaneously. Most pigmented nevi are composed of pigment cells and are mostly benign; in rare cases, they can become malignant (melanoma), and once they do, they are extremely malignant, have a very rapid metastasis rate, and are very poorly treated. In our daily life, we should not ignore the existence of moles on our body, but there is no need to be afraid of them because of the propaganda of film and television works or scientific news, we should “know our own moles” and have a good idea of the location, size, quantity and color. Normal moles may be stable or grow slowly, so there is no need to worry about the existence of these moles, as long as you observe them regularly and pay attention to them. For some moles with symptoms, we need to pay extra attention to them: obvious enlargement/thickening within a short period of time, color change of the mole (especially for those with lighter color), itching/bleeding/crusting, several small “satellite” moles around the mole, sudden loss of hair on the mole, etc. Once these conditions occur, we need to seek medical attention early and remove the mole for Pathological examination. At the same time, some moles in certain areas have the tendency to become malignant, so even if the above conditions do not occur, surgical removal is recommended: moles growing on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, lips of the mouth, external genitalia, and any long-term friction areas. For the treatment of moles, surgical excision and suturing is the first choice. The complete body of the mole is removed surgically, and smaller ones are sutured together directly along the skin texture, leaving only a small straight scar at the end; larger ones can be excised in stages or sutured by local flap transfer, which requires deeper plastic surgery skills, but the postoperative effect can achieve a flatter local area with less obvious scars.
