Many young people in life will find that their parents fall more and more as they get older and older. “One fall for the elderly is a worry for the whole family”, and although falls among the elderly are not a disease, they are indeed a cause for concern. According to a survey, one of the main causes of accidental death in the elderly is falling, yet in the case of the United States 40% of the elderly will fall. In order to ensure the safety of the elderly and reduce the number of accidental deaths, the problem of how to avoid falls among the elderly has become a major problem that needs to be solved. Why do seniors fall? Experts point out that: as we age, the human skeletal structure degenerates, the elasticity and toughness of the bone weakens and becomes brittle, and the muscle strength gradually decreases, resulting in higher gait instability and a significant decrease in balance, so the body cannot maintain balance under the action of external forces, leading to falls. Experts believe that although it is impossible for the elderly to avoid a fall, but through exercise to improve balance, coupled with some fall prevention measures, many elderly people can avoid many falls should not fall. In a recent report in the New England Journal, a leading international academic journal, tai chi was reported to improve gait and balance in people with Parkinson’s disease. The four-year study randomized Parkinson’s patients to three exercise groups: a tai chi group, a resistance training group, or a stretching group. The patients participated in training for 60 minutes twice a week for 24 weeks. The results of the study showed that the patients in the tai chi group had the most significant improvement in balance and gait function compared to the other two exercise treatment groups, and it was concluded that tai chi exercise is the best exercise treatment for improving gait and balance. Taijiquan has evolved and developed through the long-term practice of our people over the generations, and has become a kind of exercise program with valuable medical value, easy and gentle. Many studies in China have proved that Taijiquan is one of the most suitable exercises for the elderly to strengthen their bodies. Taijiquan training can prevent osteoporosis, slow down bone and joint degeneration, and improve cardiopulmonary function. Nowadays, foreign evidence-based medical studies have proven that taijiquan can improve the motor balance of the elderly, further enriching the traditional taijiquan exercise therapy. Taijiquan is an easy-to-learn, low-cost exercise that older adults may want to try.
