Patients with scalp pain should first check the scalp for redness and swelling and for elevated temperature to touch. If the scalp is red, swollen and warm, with follicular papules and nodules, this suggests a scalp infection and requires topical treatment. If the scalp is intact and pain is evident to touch, this is a common form of neuropathic scalp pain. Pain throughout the scalp is considered a tension headache and can be improved by massaging the scalp, regulating emotions, taking rest, adopting good habits, quitting smoking, quitting alcohol, exercising and improving the immune system.
