Whether an atrial septal defect can heal on its own is related to the size of the defect and the age of the child, and cannot be generalized. Atrial septal defect is a congenital heart disease. If the septal defect is less than 5 mm, the baby is less than 1 year old, and there is no increase in heart load and no symptoms of weakness after activity, regular observation is sufficient and surgery is not necessary. If the defect is larger than 5 mm, it needs to be examined and treated by cardiovascular surgery. The chance of self-healing of atrial septal defect is high within 1 year of age, and gradually decreases after 1 year of age, and basically cannot be self-healed after 2 years of age, so active medical treatment is needed, and surgery is recommended at 3 years of age. Generally, after 3 months of surgical treatment, children can do some simple physical exercises and pay attention to their daily diet, so they can live a normal life. Note that strenuous physical activities should be avoided for six months.
