Fibroadenoma of the breast is definitely not getting smaller. Fibroadenoma of the breast is the most common benign tumor in young women. Fibroadenoma of the breast is a true tumor of the breast parenchyma and can easily be confused with cystic hyperplasia of the breast. Further ultrasound or even cytocentesis is required to make a definitive diagnosis. Fibroadenoma of the breast is mainly associated with estrogen, progesterone and lactogen imbalance, and is mainly manifested as a single or multiple painless, well-defined, mobile, hard lump in the breast. There are no medications available to control the growth of fibroadenoma or to eliminate it, and the only treatment is surgical excision. For breast fibroadenomas less than 1 cm in diameter, minimally invasive surgery, known as McMurdo spinotomy, can be used, while breast fibroadenomas over 2 cm in diameter are usually treated by excisional surgery. Very few patients with fibroadenoma of the breast may cause cancer, so routine pathological examination must be done after surgery to rule out the possibility of malignancy.
