Can I get rid of my glasses once my amblyopia is cured?

In the later stages of amblyopia treatment, many parents often ask the same question with great anticipation, “Will my child be able to take off his glasses once his amblyopia is cured?” Some parents even take off their own glasses after being told that their child’s amblyopia has been cured! To answer this question, we must first clarify the following points: 1. The process of seeing something with the human eye is a “visual processing” process, and the raw material for processing is the projection of the “something” in the fundus of the eye. Projection, a clear projection is the basic premise of clear vision. Refractive error (including farsightedness, myopia, astigmatism) patients can not see “things” because of the eye focus ability defects, “things” can not form a clear projection in the eye. The role of glasses is to compensate for this defect in the eye. If the eye has such a defect, and without the use of glasses, it is impossible to “really” see things clearly! 2. For children with amblyopia, the cure of amblyopia only indicates the return of normal visual discrimination, but does not mean that the structure of the eye is necessarily normal. Therefore, if the child’s eyes still have “degrees” due to structural defects, you need to continue to wear glasses, otherwise it is easy to lead to amblyopia relapse and lose all the work! 3, amblyopia treatment includes two aspects: one is to improve the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye, and the other is to rebuild and restore binocular visual function. Binocular visual function includes the following three levels: (1) simultaneous visual function – the ability of both eyes to see the same target object at the same time; (2) fusion function – the ability of both eyes to see the same target object formed by the two images into one; (3) stereo vision – the ability of both eyes to see the same target object as one; (4) stereo vision – the ability of both eyes to see the same target object as one. (3) Stereopsis – the ability of both eyes to judge the level and spatial location of the target object. The ultimate goal of amblyopia treatment is not only to improve the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye, but also to always strive for the best possible binocular visual function, and the reconstruction and restoration of binocular visual function is not inevitable with the improvement of monocular vision, but requires corresponding technical interventions, including detection, training, assessment, etc. For patients with refractive amblyopia, refractive parallax amblyopia, and partial strabismic amblyopia, wearing appropriate glasses plays a crucial role in the reconstruction and restoration of binocular visual function. 4, healthy vision includes three levels of connotation: first, is to see clearly; second, is to see comfortably; third, is to see lasting. Whether glasses can be removed or not depends not on anyone’s desire or preference, but on whether the three criteria of healthy vision mentioned above can be achieved after removing glasses. The goal of amblyopia treatment is to improve the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye and to further establish and restore binocular vision, not to “remove the glasses”. In summary, for most patients, the cure of amblyopia does not mean the end of wearing glasses, and it is wrong and dangerous to remove glasses blindly! Who can remove their glasses? And when can glasses be removed? Just as the development of children’s vision is a dynamic and gradual process, the development of children’s eye structure also tends to be (relatively) perfect and stable as their bodies develop, so the “degree” of children’s eyes is also constantly changing, in general, the basic trend of farsightedness is to gradually reduce, if it is as low as they can overcome In general, the basic trend of farsightedness is to gradually reduce it to the level of “physiological farsightedness” that one can overcome, and to remove glasses if the naked eye vision is stable and normal. The basic trend of myopia is to gradually increase, the degree of which varies by nature and from person to person. For the majority of people, this change ends in adulthood. For highly farsighted and nearsighted people, whether or not they can eventually remove their glasses depends on the degree of their eye structure at the end of development and their requirements for visual acuity level. You can choose to remove or intermittently remove the glasses. On the contrary, if you are unable to work and live normally after removing glasses, you will need to wear glasses for a long time. Most children wear glasses as required during the developmental stage of their eyes, so that their eyes can develop loosely under the “support” of glasses and their vision level can be improved to the fullest, which actually creates more “possibilities” for removing glasses in the future, rather than what some “experienced” people say. The “experienced” people say that “once you wear glasses, you are dependent on them for life”.
