Prostatitis can affect adult men of all ages, with a higher prevalence in adult men under the age of 50. Although it is not a direct life-threatening disease, it can seriously affect a patient’s quality of life. The different types of prostatitis have different causes and different hazards. Type I (acute bacterial prostatitis), which starts rapidly, can manifest as chills, high fever, accompanied by persistent and obvious symptoms of lower urinary tract infection, such as urinary frequency, urinary urgency, urinary pain, burning sensation of urination, difficulty urinating, urinary retention, and discomfort in the posterior urethra, anus, and perineal area. However, if treated properly, the progress is fast and recovery is quick, and the symptoms are usually temporary and do not leave after-effects. Type II (chronic bacterial prostatitis), with recurrent lower urinary tract infection symptoms, but lasting longer than 3 months, although the symptoms type I have moderated, but the duration is long, and generally does not leave sequelae. Type III (chronic aseptic prostatitis), mainly manifests as pain in the pelvic region, which can be seen in the perineum, penis, perianal area, urethra, pubic bone or lumbosacral area. Urinary abnormalities may manifest as urinary urgency, frequency, painful urination and increased nocturia. In addition, due to chronic pain that remains untreated, patients have a reduced quality of life and may have systemic impairments such as sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory loss, etc. The course of the disease is also more prolonged and difficult to cure. Type IV (asymptomatic prostatitis), there are generally no no subjective symptoms and only evidence of inflammation is found during examinations concerning the prostate. It is also the least harmful, but similar to type III, it is more difficult to cure. So, in general the dangers of prostatitis focus on bacterial infection and urinary tract symptoms, but some types have a long course that is difficult to eradicate and can also cause some systemic damage.
