Many of you have experienced eyelid fluttering. When it happens occasionally, we can laugh it off as a joke about “wealth jumping from the left eye and disaster jumping from the right”. However, if you experience frequent eyelid fluttering or facial muscle twitching, it can be very annoying for some people. In neurology clinics, some patients, especially middle-aged and elderly people, often experience increased eye flutter, excessive blinking, photophobia, and sometimes even difficulty opening their eyes. A few patients also show bilateral eyelid spasms such as double eye fluttering. The more nervous and fatigued these patients are, the worse it is, and it even affects their social life, making their eyes jump more when they meet friends or speak on stage. These patients are likely to have blepharospasm. In other patients, the muscles on one side of the face are throbbing, and the corners of the mouth are twitching, sometimes lightly, sometimes heavily. These patients are likely to suffer from lateral facial muscle spasms. What should be done to treat blepharospasm or facial myasthenia gravis? First of all, you should visit a neurologist at a regular hospital, who will perform the necessary tests to confirm the diagnosis and then give the appropriate treatment. Commonly used treatments include symptomatic treatment with oral medications, microvascular decompression of the facial nerve root, and intramuscular botulinum toxin injections for spasticity. Botulinum toxin type A treatment is currently the only treatment with evidence-based medical evidence for this type of treatment for blepharospasm and facial muscle spasm. Approximately 76% to 100% of patients experience significant or complete relief of symptoms after injection therapy, with an average duration of efficacy of 3-6 months, with some patients experiencing longer duration of efficacy. Repeated injections over a long period of time can maintain the efficacy of the treatment. Botulinum toxin is a highly toxic neurotoxin, and regular medical institutions have a series of corresponding norms and procedures, and trained and qualified doctors to use it exclusively in order to ensure its efficacy and avoid adverse side effects to the greatest extent possible. Patients should choose a regular medical institution and qualified physician for diagnosis and treatment.
