Dizziness is a common disease in Chinese medicine and was first described in the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine. Dizziness refers to blurred vision or blackness in front of the eyes, while dizziness refers to lightheadedness or even the sensation of spinning oneself or external scenery, both of which are often seen together and are collectively called vertigo. The symptoms of vertigo can be seen in a variety of Western medical diseases, such as hypertension, hypotension, and inadequate blood supply to the vertebral basilar artery. The following is an introduction to the herbal diagnosis and treatment of vertigo. The principle of vertigo treatment is to nourish the deficient and diarrhea the actual. Clinical evidence is often divided into five major types: (1) hyperactivity of liver and yang (2) deficiency of qi and blood (3) deficiency of kidney essence (4) phlegm and dampness (5) stasis of blood and obstruction of orifices. Liver Yang hyperactivity type mostly manifests as dizziness, tinnitus, head and eyes swelling and pain, impatience and irritability, etc., with red tongue, yellow coating and string or number of pulse. The deficiency of qi and blood is manifested by dizziness, exacerbated by movement, fatigue, palpitations, poor sleep, pale tongue with thin white coating, weak pulse, and the commonly used formula is Gui Spleen Tang, commonly used drugs are Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Astragali, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Rehmanniae, Jujube, etc. Kidney essence deficiency is manifested by dizziness for a long time, soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, insomnia and dreaminess, forgetfulness, with a pale tongue and white fur and weak pulse, and the commonly used formula is Zuo Gui Wan, commonly used drugs are Shu Di, fried yam, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Tortoise Board, Ox Knee, Wolfberry, etc. The type of phlegm-dampness obstruction is mostly manifested as vertigo, dizziness and dullness, accompanied by chest tightness and nausea, sleep, with light tongue, fatty coating and white, slippery pulse, and the commonly used formula is Hexia, Atractylodes, Tianma Tang, with the commonly used drugs being Hexia, Chen Pi, Fried Atractylodes, Coix Seed, Tianma, etc. Blood stasis blocking the orifice type mostly manifests as vertigo, headache, insomnia, tinnitus and deafness, purple face and lips, dark red tongue with petechiae, thin white fur, and astringent pulse. The disease of vertigo lies in the clear orifices and is closely related to the liver, spleen and kidneys.
