How to calculate the carbohydrate content?

For people with diabetes, carbohydrate counting is an important way to ensure that blood glucose levels remain within the target range. Although the amount of carbohydrate that should be consumed depends on a variety of factors, such as the amount of exercise and medication, the recommended limit is 130 grams per day, divided equally between meals.

To help keep track of your carbohydrate intake, here are 15 common foods that all contain about 15 grams of carbohydrate.

  • 1 small piece of fresh fruit (about 110 grams), such as an apple;
  • 1/2 cups of canned or frozen fruit;
  • 1 slice of bread (about 30 grams);
  • 1 (20 cm) corn tortilla;
  • half cup of oatmeal;
  • 1/3  cup of pasta or rice;
  • 4 to 6 crackers;
  • 1/2 English muffins;
  • 1/2 cups (about 120 ml) of starchy vegetables;
  • 1/4 baked potato;
  • 2/3 cup (about 160 ml) plain nonfat yogurt;
  • 2 small cookies;
  • 1/2 cups (about 120 ml) ice cream or sherbet;
  • 1 tablespoon of syrup or jam;
  • 1 cup (about 240 ml) of soup.
