Recently, the Department of Plastic Surgery admitted a special child named Chen, a 4-month-old boy who was abandoned by his parents because his eyes were completely wrapped and closed by skin at birth. After the child was admitted to the hospital, the specialists conducted a detailed examination and confirmed the diagnosis of congenital bilateral cryptophthalmos. Cryptophthalmos is a rare autosomal recessive disorder in which the eyeballs and eyelids are born malformed, with the eyeballs completely covered by the skin and no lid fissures, and only the remains of the eyeballs or no eyeballs at all, making it a rare congenital anomaly. Because of the lack of light stimulation, the affected child’s vision gradually deteriorates with age until he or she becomes blind. Less than 100 cases of this disease have been reported worldwide, and it is mostly unilateral and even rarer bilateral. The child is so small that you can often see the eyeballs beneath his skin bouncing around, and the eyes are like “windows to the soul”, but now they are closed, and the condition of little Chen touches the hearts of the entire plastic surgery staff. Although this is a difficult surgery that has no practice to learn from, however, according to the examination results of Xiao Chen, the experts decided to perform corrective surgery for him as soon as possible to reconstruct the eye fissure to improve its appearance, to let him receive light stimulation as soon as possible, to promote the development of the eye, and to minimize the impact of the deformity on the development of his eye vision. With the collaboration of the anesthesiology department, the specialists performed this delicate surgery on the 4-month-old child. After an hour of intense surgery, the surgeons completed the oculoplasty and successfully separated the skin tissues adhering to the eye. When the child, whose eyes were covered with gauze, was carried out from the operating room, the medical staff present were thrilled that the little Chen, who had a horrible face, was finally able to open his eyes, and that the “window to his soul” was finally opened. The specialist said, now is only the first step of treatment, the results are better than expected, but the two sides of the stunted eyes have to be further examined to know whether they have certain visual function, and then according to the results of the examination, determine the next treatment plan. At present, the first phase of the surgery wound has been completely healed, the second phase of the surgery will be performed in a month.
