(1) The tablets should be cold soaked with drinking water for about 60 minutes, generally the first decoction with water is 2~3cm above the surface of the medicine after soaking, and the second decoction with water up to the surface of the medicine. (2) After soaking, the herbal medicine should be decocted with martial fire (high fire) and then with civil fire (low fire), keeping it at a slight boil and stirring appropriately. Each dose of medicine should be decocted twice. For cold medicine, the first decoction should be boiled for about 20 minutes on civil fire, and the second decoction should be boiled for about 15 minutes; for tonic medicine, the first decoction should be boiled for about 40 minutes on civil fire, and the second decoction should be boiled for about 30 minutes; for other medicine, the first decoction should be boiled for about 30 minutes on civil fire, and the second decoction should be boiled for 20 minutes. After the decoction is ready, strain the decoction while it is still hot, combine the two decoctions, mix well and take it in two doses. (3) For drugs that need to be decocted first in the prescription, it can be decocted for about 20 minutes first; drugs can be put in about five minutes before the first decoction is ready; molten drugs (gums) can be steamed with a little yellow wine and then blended into the decoction and taken together; drugs (powders) can be blended into the decoction and taken together.
