Silicosis is a chronic fibrotic lung disease and the silicofibrosis that has developed cannot be reversed.
1. Patients with stable simple silicosis can be asymptomatic, have normal lung function and basically do not affect their daily life and work.
2. Patients with progressive silicosis simplex or complex silicosis can suffer from respiratory distress, lung dysfunction, complications and a poor prognosis.
Active measures should be taken to control dust exposure and prevent the development of silicosis. Standardise occupational health surveillance and diagnose early. Once diagnosed, silicosis should be removed from dust work, kept away from tobacco, reviewed regularly, symptomatic treatment taken to relieve symptoms, prevention and treatment of complications, as well as rehabilitation. For patients with end-stage silicosis, lung transplantation may be considered.
