Ms. Liu, 55 years old, had pain on the top of the left side of her head for more than 20 years, with persistent pins-and-needles pain, aggravated by emotion, tightness in the occipital area and top of the head, and soreness and swelling in the temporal muscles. There was a strong painful point on the right side of the head. The pain was especially pronounced when pressure was applied. For more than 20 years, Ms. Liu had been to many hospitals for many tests, including magnetic resonance of head and cervical spine, CT, etc., but no problems were found. She has also undergone many treatments, including various medications and physiotherapy, all to no avail. Ms. Liu once became desperate for treatment of the disease. In early September 2014, Ms. Liu went to the pain department of the hospital after many inquiries. The director conducted a detailed consultation, careful physical examination, and viewed various laboratory tests and imaging examinations, and diagnosed Ms. Liu’s headache as neuralgia after careful analysis of Ms. Liu’s condition. Director Zhou Huacheng told Ms. Liu that her pain point was at the intersection of three nerves, namely the supraorbital nerve, auriculotemporal nerve and occipital nerve, and the cause was complex and the responsible nerve was difficult to locate, so the treatment was difficult to be effective. This is also the reason for the poor treatment results for more than 20 years. After analyzing the condition, the director treated Ms. Liu with a nerve block and administered drug injections at the strong pain point, supraorbital nerve and auriculotemporal nerve outlet, respectively. After the first treatment, Ms. Liu’s pain was relieved by 70%, and her sleep condition improved significantly. One week later, Ms. Liu received a second nerve block treatment, which provided more than 95% pain relief and reached the level of clinical cure. At this point, Ms. Liu’s pain of more than 20 years was completely resolved. The director suggested that nerve block therapy is a good treatment for soft tissue pain and intractable neuralgia. The therapy can block the conduction pathway of pain and directly relieve pain, as well as block the vicious cycle of pain, improve blood circulation, relieve visceral and vascular pain, and also relieve sympathetic tension, while having anti-inflammatory effects. Nerve block therapy is one of the main techniques for the treatment of chronic pain disorders, with the advantages of minimally invasive, efficacious and low cost. In addition, the director especially suggests that for intractable pain, the cause must be identified to exclude pain induced by tumor, tuberculosis, infection, etc. Any treatment should be carried out with a clear diagnosis. Otherwise, it will not only delay the disease, but may also cause side damage to the body.
