Type 2 diabetes mellitus is relative to the category of “thirst disease” in Chinese medicine, and can be treated with Liufei Di Huang Wan if it is characterized by deficiency of kidney yin. The pill consists of ripened rhubarb, cornelian cherry, moutan skin, Chinese yam, poria, and zedoary. It has the effect of nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney. The main manifestations of thirst-suppressing disease belonging to the deficiency of kidney yin are frequent and copious urination, turbid as ointment, or sweet-smelling urine, aching waist and knees, fatigue, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth and lips, dry and itchy skin, red tongue with little moss, and a fine pulse (the pulse becomes narrower and finer, and the rate is accelerated).
