Study finds sunscreen not effective in preventing skin cancer

A new study by British scientists has found that sunscreen cannot stop the sun’s ultraviolet rays from reaching the skin, breaking the conventional wisdom that sunscreen is a reliable way to prevent skin cancer. The study shows that while sunscreens can prevent sunburn and short-term sunbathing effects, they cannot stop UV rays from penetrating the skin and causing potentially fatal diseases over time. Experts warn: “Anyone in the sun for even a short period of time should ensure that they are covered up and should not rely on sunscreen alone.” The University of Manchester and the Institute of Cancer Research in London carried out the world’s first molecular study of malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Their paper published in the journal “Nature” (Nature) tells that even the highest level of SPF 50 sunscreen can not stop a large amount of UV radiation through the skin and thus damage the DNA in the skin pigment cells. Richard Marais from the University of Manchester (Richard Marais) research found that “UV rays will damage the genes that protect us from it, and this shows how dangerous such carcinogens are.” Although sunscreen does not eliminate skin cancer, Professor Marais recommends that people should stick to sunscreen because, while it does not provide complete protection, it can slow the carcinogenic effects of UV light. But he said no one should rely solely on sunscreen to protect them from skin cancer. He said, “The point of this work is to combine sunscreen application with other strategies to protect our skin, including wearing hats and loose clothing, and seeking shade when the sun is at its hottest.” Professor Mare says one of his key discoveries is the “genetic guardian” P53, a protein that is activated when we are exposed to the sun to protect the skin from UV radiation. But solar radiation can knock down the skin’s guardian P53 protein, and sunscreen is unlikely to block UV rays to protect. In conclusion, in order to minimize the risk of skin cancer, we should change the old concept of “one bottle of sunscreen can fix everything” and insist on taking good sun protection measures, the first choice is to avoid the sun, the second is to wear sun hat, T-shirt and pants, and the third step is to use sunscreen.
