How to determine if it’s sciatica

Determining sciatica generally requires a combination of symptoms, physical examination and imaging. 1. Symptoms: It mainly manifests as pain in the buttocks, posterior thighs and posterior-lateral calves, and in some cases, numbness and burning sensation. The pain is induced when coughing, sneezing, bending or squatting. 2. Physical examination: localized pain when pressing along the sciatic nerve, positive straight leg raising test, muscle weakness of the lower limbs and abnormal local sensation. 3. Imaging examination: lumbar magnetic resonance examination can find lumbar disc herniation compressing the nerves. If the sciatica is caused by pyriformis syndrome, the enlarged pyriformis muscle will be found in the area of the pyriformis muscle to compress the nerve, and the electromyography can clarify the area of nerve compression. To determine the sciatica need to go to the hospital for further examination.
