Men need care too

(Reporter Duan Huamei) As men age, especially after the age of 40, androgen production decreases and clinical symptoms such as low libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced physical fitness and muscle tone, sleep disorders, fatigue and abnormal vascular relaxation occur to varying degrees, which is called male menopause, also known as partial androgen deficiency in middle and old age (ADAM). Menopause is a transitional period from middle age to old age, a stage of transition from maturity to aging, which is an objective law of life and a natural phenomenon that does not depend on human will. The menopause of women has long been known, but for a long time, the menopause of men has not attracted enough attention from the society. At present, the International Society for the Study of Middle-Aged and Older Men’s Health has changed the name of menopause to “late-onset hypogonadism (LOH)”. According to Dr. Wang Baoqing, a master of reproductive sexology at the Department of Reproductive Medicine of the People’s Hospital, menopause in men is a slow and gradual process that occurs earlier and lasts longer than menopause in women, starting at age 40 and showing a high incidence after age 60. At the same time, not all men who go through menopause will have clinical symptoms. According to a study conducted by the Research Office of Men’s Diseases, Research Institute of the National Population and Family Planning Commission from 2007 to 2009, nearly 40% of middle-aged and older men in China have some degree of neurological disorders, depression, memory loss, poor concentration, easy fatigue, insomnia or drowsiness, hot flashes, good sweating, irritability, mood swings and difficulty in achieving and maintaining penile erection, which are typical male characteristics of menopause. It has been shown that LOH has the following high prevalence groups: men with high work pressure such as managers, bosses and civil servants in enterprises and institutions; men with chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; men with smoking, alcoholism and a rich nightlife; men in poor working and living environments. Although men’s menopause is complicated, it can be self-tested by the following ADAM self-assessment chart. Once there is an abnormality, you should seek early medical attention and standardized treatment. Dr. Wang Baoqing also said that the majority of menopausal men know too little or nothing about this period of their lives. In the event of excessive sweating, panic and erectile insecurity, most men will choose to be silent and not have the courage to go to the doctor, but will have worries and panic in their minds. However, the excessive concern and worry caused by such unexpected physical and psychological changes in these men is often destructive. Without an understanding spouse at this time, these problems can add to a man’s psychological burden and produce significant sexual frustration and complete erectile dysfunction, and can even be the trigger for life crises such as family splits and even vicious events such as suicide. Dr. Wang Baoqing said that compared to women, men’s health is often disregarded, making men in the early stages of sub-health and disease often fail to seek medical attention in a timely manner, and many are already in an advanced state of disease when they receive treatment, making treatment more costly and recovery more difficult. If men have sufficient knowledge about menopause, they can seek professional medical consultation when they are not feeling well, so that they can be diagnosed and treated early to reduce clinical symptoms, improve quality of life and reduce medical expenses. Men are the backbone of our society, especially men in menopause, who are playing an important role in the family and in the workplace, and are often physically and mentally exhausted by all the pressures from family and society. Men in this special stage of life, do not ignore their physical changes, should receive timely consultation and treatment from the relevant doctors, in order to maintain a healthy body and vigorous energy, smoothly through the menopause stage, lay the foundation for the next stage of life, so as to enjoy a happy and beautiful old age.
