Can you speak clearly when you’re moderately deaf?

Whether or not a person with moderate or severe deafness can speak clearly is determined by the age and duration of the deafness. Deafness that exists at birth or occurs during the critical period of language formation can affect speech; post-speech deafness can mostly speak clearly. Moderate or severe deafness that occurs during childhood, when language formation is critical, is a serious obstacle to the development of the still-developing language formation system because it weakens or inhibits the stimulation of speech from the outside world. It requires timely detection and corrective and rehabilitative treatments such as the fitting of hearing aids, or else there is a high probability that the person will have slurred speech or even be unable to speak, which is very difficult to rectify. Post-speech deafness refers to deafness that develops after speech formation. Temporary moderate-to-severe deafness that occurs after the formation of speech or suddenly, usually does not have a great impact on speech, can still speak clearly, but with the prolongation of time, speech function will gradually deteriorate. It is recommended to seek prompt medical attention for moderate to severe deafness, and to improve hearing and other auxiliary examinations for prompt treatment.
