Will breast implants affect breastfeeding?

A question often asked by breast augmentation candidates is: will breast implants affect breastfeeding? Especially after the full liberalization of the second child policy, there are many candidates who are ready to have their second child after having breast augmentation due to breast shrinkage caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding after the first birth, and are more likely to encounter such doubts. In fact, although the purpose of breast augmentation surgery is to increase the volume of the breast, the implant is actually not placed in the breast, but in a bi-plane level behind the breast, behind the pectoralis major muscle, or partly behind the pectoralis major muscle and partly behind the breast, therefore, the surgery will not cause damage to the breast. On the other hand, from the material point of view, the silicone gel used as the implant is a kind of organic silicon, which is a very stable material and will not cause adverse effects on human immune system, nervous system and body development, which has been the result of a long time and large sample investigation in the clinic. The U.S. FDA has done a long period of clinical follow-up, completely confirmed the safety of silicone gel prosthesis for breastfeeding. However, there is one exception, if the incision at the areola margin is used, the mammary gland needs to be bypassed or cut longitudinally when peeling the lumen of the prosthesis, which may damage the mammary tissue, which in turn may have some impact on the lactation function. Therefore, the areola incision should be avoided for breast augmentation surgery for candidates with fertility requirements. Other incisions besides the areola incision, including the axillary incision and the inframammary fold incision, will not have any impact on the mammary glands and will not affect the breastfeeding function. In conclusion, breast augmentation is a very safe surgery and will not adversely affect breastfeeding and babies as long as a suitable incision is chosen.
