Analysis of type 1 diabetes mellitus in Chinese medicine

Type 1 diabetes mellitus can be categorized as “thirst-quenching” in traditional Chinese medicine. Thirstiness can be categorized into different types such as upper, middle, lower, and yin and yang deficiency, and can be treated with medicines such as Thirst Formula and Jade Maiden Decoction. 1. Upper elimination: caused by lung heat and fluid injury (there is heat in the lungs, which continuously depletes the body’s fluid), manifesting as excessive thirst and drinking, dryness of the mouth and tongue, frequent and copious urination, and irritable heat (irritable and sultry) and excessive sweating. Treatment is often chosen to clear heat and moisten the lungs, generate fluid to quench thirst, such as Quenching Thirst Formula. The adverse reactions and contraindications of this formula are not clear. 2. Middle Cancer: caused by lung heat, manifesting as excessive food and hunger, thirst, excessive urination, emaciation, dry stools, etc. The treatment may include clearing the stomach and diarrhea, and removing the fire. Treatment may include Jade Maiden Decoction, which is used to clear the stomach and diarrhea the fire, nourish yin and increase the fluid in the body (increase the fluid in the body). The adverse effects of this formula are not clear. Those with loose stools should not take this formula. 3. Lower elimination: caused by deficiency of kidney yin, manifesting as frequent and copious urination, turbid as ointment, or sweet urine, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth and lips, etc. The treatment includes nourishing yin, tonifying the kidney and increasing fluid. Treatment is mostly with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan which nourishes yin and tonifies the kidney, moistening dryness and quenching thirst. The adverse reactions and contraindications of this formula are not clear, and it is not advisable to take cold medicine during the medication. 4. Yin and Yang deficiency: manifested as frequent urination, turbid as paste, even drinking one ulcer (urination) one, emaciated face, dry earwheel, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, lack of warmth in the limbs, fear of cold and cold limbs. Treatment is with Jin Gui Ren Qi Pill which warms yang and nourishes yin, tonifies the kidney and fixes astringency. The adverse effects of this formula are not clear, and pregnant women should not take it. Avoid taking cold and raw food during the period of taking the medicine.
