  Recent side effects include radiation thyroiditis, transient salivary glanditis, and radiation gastritis. Patients may experience neck and ear pain, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. 131 One month after iodine treatment, transient blood leukocyte or platelet depression may occur, which is usually mild and does not require special treatment. Long-term side effects include radiation pneumonitis and pulmonary fibrosis, which mostly occur in patients with diffuse lung metastases. Hypoparathyroidism may occur in a very small number of patients, and the prevalence of leukemia is relatively increased in patients on long-term high-dose therapy.
