How to implement a successful exercise program for people with diabetes?

Ready to go to the gym? It’s great for people with diabetes and can help eliminate mental stress and make feel refreshed. Once working out becomes a habit, it’s amazing how much you look forward to doing it!

First, talk to your doctor about what fitness activities to avoid. There may be more exercise than you think.

Once your doctor gives you the green light, there are so many activities to choose from for people with diabetes. Which fitness activities are more fun? Pick something you like and enjoy it.

Check your blood sugar before and after exercise.

Checking blood sugar levels before and after exercise

“Checking your blood sugar is a motivational tool,” said Jacqueline Shahar, a clinical exercise physiologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. “When exercising and seeing your blood sugar improve, you’re likely to exercise more because it can lead to improved blood sugar in a healthy direction.”

Regular checkups

Doctors will reduce the dose of insulin or diabetes treatment medication in time. But it’s still a good idea to check regularly to make sure your blood sugar doesn’t get too high or too low.

Carry a little snack with you in case of hypoglycemia

Be prepared for emergencies. When going to the gym or outdoors for exercise, carry a quick-acting snack in case your blood sugar drops too low during exercise.

Shoes should fit well

A good pair of shoes can help avoid foot injury. When having diabetes, foot damage can become more severe. The shoes worn should be appropriate for the activity. If you are in doubt about this, you should consult your doctor.

Wearing a diabetic ID badge

A special bracelet or collar, or other item that identifies you as having diabetes, should be worn. The marker should indicate information such as emergency contacts and whether insulin is being used.
