What to pay attention to when doing glucose tolerance

Glucose tolerance test results are an important basis for determining whether a pregnant woman has diabetes. Because gestational diabetes increases the risk of pregnancy during delivery and can cause fetal mega, premature birth, malformations, and other disorders, pregnant women should be tested for glucose tolerance between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Patients should keep their diet light and not eat foods high in sugar, fat, or salt a week to two weeks before the glucose tolerance test to avoid affecting the test results. Patients also need to eat limited amounts of fruit, as most fruits are high in sugar. Patients can eat more vegetables and other foods that are high in fiber.

The day before the test, patients should fast and abstain from food and water for at least eight hours. Patients need to have a blood draw to test their blood sugar before fasting. Then start drinking glucose water. It is important to note that when drinking glucose water, you should not drink it too fast, you need to drink it one sip at a time, but you need to finish it within five minutes. Then take the first sip of the glucose water as the node, and draw blood for blood glucose testing one hour later and two hours later.

If the patient has high blood glucose, they need to pay special attention to their diet in the future and consume less sugary foods. If the glucose tolerance result is positive, proving that the patient has gestational diabetes, treatment needs to be given as early as possible to avoid effects on both the fetus and the patient.
