What is “facial spasm”?

The facial nerve is like a cable, and the nerve fibers that make up the facial nerve are like the many thin wires contained in this cable, and normally there is an insulating layer between these fibers, so the current goes through each nerve fiber in its own way without interfering with each other. There are many blood vessels on the surface of the human brain, in infants and children, the curvature of these vessels is relatively straight state, the vessels do not press on the nerve, but with the growth of age, these vessels continue to meander and lengthen, and even bend into a circle, in these curved vessels, some of them bend toward the facial nerve, and eventually press on the facial nerve, and gradually increase the pressure on the facial nerve, resulting in damage to the insulation layer of the nerve fibers, that is The insulation layer of many small thin wires in the above cable is crushed, and when a current passes through, a short circuit occurs, causing current disturbance and resulting in interference with the signal at the distal end of the line. The facial nerve innervates the activity of half of the facial muscles, and when these interfering signals reach the muscles, the facial muscles receive abnormal commands and begin to beat haphazardly, resulting in facial muscle spasms. As the compression of blood vessels becomes heavier and heavier, the extent of facial nerve damage becomes larger and larger, more and more nerve fibers are short-circuited, and the line signal interference becomes greater and greater, resulting in more and more facial muscle jumping and even a state of continuous twitching. Onset process: It usually starts from around the eyes first, and gradually progresses to the face and the corners of the mouth and neck. The jumping starts lightly, just like eyelid jumping, and gradually worsens, the jumping becomes twitching, and the more twitching, the stronger it becomes. If left untreated, patients older than 10 years may develop paralytic facial palsy (facial muscles atrophy and immobility, and facial muscle movements disappear). Patient performance: The eyelid throbbing starts, usually from around the eyes, intermittently, gradually progressively worsens, and the range of the throbbing gradually extends to the whole face in a few months to a few years or so. The throbbing at the beginning gradually turns into strong twitching as the condition develops and is completely out of one’s control. The twitching is obviously aggravated by fatigue, tension, and mental concentration, and the patient often says, “The more I don’t want him to jump, the more he jumps,” and in severe cases, he cannot open his eyes for a long time, which seriously affects normal life and work. Treatment principle: the nerve compression of the blood vessel pad open, so that the external force leading to facial nerve damage is removed, is to remove the root of the disease, the facial nerve has a self-repair function, after a period of repair, the short-circuited fibers disconnected, the interference signal will disappear, the facial muscles will be in order to move, restore the normal state, the disease is cured.
