Is small bowel mesenchymal tumor a cancer?

  Patient: Is small bowel mesenchymal tumor cancer? Will it recur after surgery?  1.Small intestinal mesenchymal tumor is a kind of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. It is classified as benign, potentially malignant and malignant, as follows: malignant indicators are: (1) tumor is infiltrative; (2) tumor appears metastasis of distant and near organs.  Potentially malignant indicators are: (1) the diameter of gastric mesenchymal tumor is 5 cm, and the diameter of intestinal mesenchymal tumor is 4 cm; (2) the nuclear schizophrenia of gastric mesenchymal tumor is 5/50 HPF, and the nuclear schizophrenia of intestinal mesenchymal tumor is ≥1/50 HPF; (3) the tumor appears necrosis; (4) the tumor cells have obvious heterotypy; (5) the tumor cells are actively growing and densely arranged. A tumor is malignant when it has one malignant indicator or two or more potentially malignant indicators; it is junctional when it has only one potentially malignant indicator, otherwise it is a benign GIST. however, it has been reported that even benign tumors show malignant transformation after 10 or 20 years. Therefore, the current academic community tends to abolish the benign-malignant criteria.  2. Small intestinal mesenchymal tumors can recur.
