What is herpes pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa and submucosal tissues. Herpes pharyngitis is a type of pharyngitis and belongs to a specific type of upper respiratory tract infection. Herpes pharyngitis is mostly caused by coxsackievirus group A. It can also be caused by other enteroviruses, such as EV71 virus, and is mostly seen in infants and children younger than 1-7 years old, preferably in summer and autumn, mostly due to poor body resistance and weaker defenses of the pediatric organism, often with viruses or bacteria invading the body, thus causing herpes pharyngitis. Herpes pharyngitis is highly infectious and spreads quickly, with the fecal-oral route or the respiratory tract as the main transmission route. The duration of the disease is usually 4-6 days, and in severe cases it can last up to 2 weeks. After the onset of the disease, the main symptoms are sudden high fever, sore throat, body temperature is usually 37.7-40 ℃, often vomiting or headache, a few children have abdominal pain, sore throat can make infants and children drooling, refusing to eat. If herpes pharyngitis is progressively aggravated, encephalitis symptoms of vomiting and convulsions can also occur, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. Small, light gray herpes, 1-2 mm in diameter, surrounded by a red halo, can be seen in the patient’s pharynx, and after breaking down into a white ulcer in 2-3 days, the herpes and ulcer can coexist. Occasionally, a single herpes or ulcer may be seen on the tonsils and tongue, but does not invade the gingiva or buccal mucosa. Herpes pharyngitis can be easily confused with HFMD, but in the former case, the herpes appears only in the oral cavity and mainly involves the pharyngeal isthmus. If the child then develops herpes on the hands, feet, buttocks and knees, the child should be alerted to HFMD. In summary, herpes pharyngitis is a special type of pharyngitis, mostly seen in infants and children between the ages of 1 and 7. If you find a child with a sudden high fever, anorexia, salivation and other symptoms, you need to be alert to this disease and should go to the hospital in time to avoid delaying treatment.
