Eyes always tearing is a common symptom in the elderly, considering several factors. First, the irritation of the eye surface by various diseases causes the production of large amounts of tears. Secondly, the amount of tears secreted by the lacrimal glands does not change, but the tear drainage channels are not smooth or are obstructed and manifest as tears; in addition, less common causes, such as certain diseases that cause excessive secretion of primary tears. There are many ocular surface diseases that cause tearing. For example, a foreign body in the conjunctival sac remaining inside the eye, or a foreign body in the cornea, can cause a foreign body sensation and irritating tearing. In addition, the tearing can occur along with congestion in the eye due to impingement, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, etc. Therefore, routine eye examinations are needed to clarify the cause and then treat the symptoms. The tearing of the eyes can also be caused by an obstruction of the tear drainage system. This is commonly caused by narrowing of the tear duct, or obstruction and chronic dacryocystitis. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by a lacrimal duct irrigation at a hospital ophthalmology clinic. If it is caused by simple lacrimal stenosis or obstruction, lacrimal duct exploration surgery or lacrimal duct laser and tube placement surgery can be considered. For patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction and chronic dacryocystitis, nasal lacrimal sac anastomosis is considered. In some older adults, lower eyelid ectropion and decreased siphoning of the tear dots may also cause tearing.
