One morning in December last year, we were seeing patients in the pain clinic as usual, when a patient in his sixties walked directly to Li Jun, the director of the pain department, with a pile of films and put his shirt up. It turned out that this patient was a retired employee of Changchun Mine, who was injured in the chest by a track during an underground operation 35 years ago. The pain worsened when the weather changed and he became irritable. The patient has visited many large tertiary hospitals in and outside the province, and has been to Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing 301 Hospital and the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University. He has taken oral anti-inflammatory painkillers, antidepressants, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and closed-loop treatment, all of which were ineffective. Whenever he was in pain, he was so irritable that he wanted to jump off a building to end his life. All of us have suffered from different kinds of pain at one time or another, and we know how painful and unbearable it is. But this patient’s condition was unique, and the pain doctors felt that this treatment was a bit tricky. As long as there was a ray of hope, we had to give 100%. Doctors began to review various materials and literature, consult with experts inside and outside the province, and meet several times to discuss and study the treatment plan. Considering that the patient had been to many hospitals in and out of the province and had failed many times, the frustration and the helplessness and fear of the disease, we had to develop the most effective treatment plan. At this point, Dr. Li Jun remembered that he had also encountered a familiar case when he was a student at Shandong Provincial Hospital, and his teacher had treated it with needle knife release and achieved very good results. The pain doctors finally decided to perform a small needle knife release for this patient. The small acupuncture procedure is a closed release procedure between surgical and non-surgical methods, and is based on the incisional surgical method combined with the acupuncture method. The operation of small needle knife therapy is characterized by cutting, peeling and loosening the adhesions at the treatment site by stabbing deep into the lesion, in order to achieve pain relief and dispel the disease. Its indications are mainly soft tissue injury lesions and bone and joint lesions. The advantage of small needle knife therapy is that the treatment process is simple and not restricted by any environment or conditions. The incision is small, no sutures are needed, the damage to human tissue is small, and it is not easy to cause infection, no adverse reaction, no obvious pain and fear for the patient, no need to rest after the operation, short treatment time, short course of treatment, and easy for the patient to accept. After communication and conversation with the patient’s family, we finally implemented the needle knife release treatment plan for the patient, but the success of the treatment is unknown to any of us. The first time in the intervention room, Dr. Li Jun did needle knife release for the patient, on the operating table, after the needle knife release treatment, the patient felt obvious relaxation of the painful area, but the final long-term treatment effect? It was still an unknown. We were looking forward to it, but we were a little scared. Two more needle-knife relaxation procedures were performed. In the midst of mixed feelings we heard the encouraging news that this patient’s pain had been significantly relieved, with 70% pain relief, and that thirty-five years of pain and suffering had finally been alleviated. The patient’s face showed a long-awaited smile. It was really a blessing that our efforts finally paid off! After three treatments, the patient has now been discharged from the hospital. When he was discharged from the hospital, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to us and went to the hospital leadership office to reflect the situation to the hospital leadership, expressing his affirmation of the business technology level and service attitude of the medical staff of the pain department. But what we want to say most is your health and your smile is our greatest happiness!
