Don’t let amblyopia “steal” your child’s eyesight!

There is an eye disease that is not painful, but can cast an irreversible shadow on a child’s growth and even on his or her life. It is amblyopia, a common eye disease that seriously endangers children’s visual function, mostly in children aged 2-7. In China, the prevalence of amblyopia in preschool and school-age children is about 3%, which means that there are about 3 amblyopic children out of 100. Amblyopia does not have symptoms such as eye redness and eye pain, and its treatment period has a strict time limit, so it is an invisible killer that seriously affects children’s vision development. Here, experts remind: parents and kindergartens should be alert to early detection and treatment. It is usually difficult to cure patients after the age of 12. There is an eye disease that is not painful but may cast an irreparable shadow on a child’s growth or even life. It is amblyopia, a common eye disease that seriously endangers the visual function of children, mostly between the ages of 2 and 7. Amblyopia is a condition in which the vision cannot be corrected to 0.8 or above without organic pathology by wearing glasses. It often occurs in children with high farsightedness, myopia, or different refraction in both eyes, and can cause strabismus that affects the aesthetics and, more importantly, often lacks stereo vision. There are many causes of amblyopia, which is a developmental disease. Amblyopia is divided into strabismic amblyopia, refractive amblyopia, form deprivation amblyopia, refractive error amblyopia and congenital amblyopia. How can we detect amblyopia in children early? 1, regular vision check Kindergarten will be screened every year, generally small children should be able to see 0.6 (4.8), middle class 0.8 (4.9), large class to first grade in 1.0 (5.0), if lower than this vision, parents should take their children to the hospital for further vision checks. 2, usually pay attention to observation In addition to low vision, children with amblyopia often have other manifestations, such as strabismus, skewed vision, squinting or sticking very close to see objects, etc. For infants and young children who cannot cooperate with the vision check, you can also do a masking check. If the child is crying or tearing the mask, it indicates that the vision of the uncovered eye is very poor and should be checked at the hospital as soon as possible. 4, early detection, early intervention The principle of prevention and treatment of amblyopia is early detection and early intervention. The critical period of human development is from birth to 3 years old; the sensitive period of visual development is from birth to 12 years old. During the critical and sensitive period of visual development, amblyopic children can recover their visual acuity with proper treatment and training.
