External sound waves are collected through the ear and transmitted from the outer ear to the middle ear, causing the eardrum to vibrate, which is then transmitted in turn to the inner ear and central nerve to produce hearing. Prolonged high decibel and volume levels make the tympanic membrane vibrate violently and may damage the eardrum or even perforate it, causing pain in the ear.
