Advantages of ICL surgery Does not destroy any structures in the eye. Can correct up to 2,000 degrees of myopia, 1,000 degrees of hyperopia, and nearly 600 degrees of astigmatism. Very fast recovery of vision after surgery. Long-term results are more stable. The surgery is reversible: it can be removed or replaced in case of special circumstances. Does not lead to corneal dilation and cone corneas that may be induced by keratoconus surgery (excimer, femtosecond, etc.). Disadvantages of ICL surgery Price is more expensive. More tests are required. Pre-operative laser peripheral iridotomy may cause discomfort and blurred vision. The procedure is an internal eye surgery and there is a risk of infection. High intraocular pressure and clouding of the lens may occur. There is a risk of corneal endothelial cell loss. Some patients may experience glare and halos. Over- or under-correction may occur. Safety of ICL surgery The eye is structurally intact and free of abnormal cuts or cone corneas that may occur with keratoconus surgery. Short-term or transient high intraocular pressure may be sent but is almost always safely controlled and does not affect postoperative results. Lens clouding also occurs occasionally and is unlikely to result in serious complications if treated promptly. The incidence of endophthalmitis is very low and usually well managed, and no such complications have occurred at our institution to date. The IOL may be off-centered and rotated, requiring secondary alignment.
