A bracket, as the name suggests, is a structure that acts as a support. The application of stents is extremely wide, and can be found everywhere in working life. For example, tripods for cameras, stents for the heart used in the medical field, etc. Especially for patients with airway stenosis, sometimes a stent can save the patient from the edge of death. Wang Xiaoping, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Shandong Chest Hospital, used to treat airway stenosis, especially those caused by long-term tracheal intubation, tracheotomy or benign lesions such as airway tuberculosis, which require repeated bronchoscopic treatment, and once a metal stent is implanted, a series of complications such as granulation tissue growth and airway restenosis may make the patient “deal with the hospital” for life. “Once a metal stent is implanted, a series of complications such as granulation tissue growth and airway restenosis may keep the patient in hospital for the rest of his life. Happily, the technology was introduced in China in March 2014, and the first silicone tracheal stent implantation was successfully carried out in Shandong Chest Hospital in the province in early May 2014. Since silicone stents are more advantageous than metal stents, does it mean that metal stents will be eliminated by silicone stents? First of all, we need to know what is airway stenosis, which should be strictly called tracheobronchial stenosis, the normal airway diameter of human body is only 1-2cm, benign or malignant respiratory diseases can make the airway narrow, causing patients to have shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing. The silicone stent has the advantages of better safety, less complications, easy removal, long-term implantation, and less likely to cause granulation tissue growth than metal stents, but the disadvantage is that it needs to rely on rigid bronchoscopy, which puts higher demands on the doctor’s technical level. In addition, the most important feature of silicone stents is that they are difficult to release and easy to remove, so for airway stenosis caused by benign diseases that require removal of the stent, silicone stents are more suitable; metal stents are easy to release and difficult to remove, so for airway stenosis caused by malignant diseases that do not require removal of the stent, metal stents are more suitable. To sum up, different airway stents have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we cannot simply say that silicone stents are better than metal stents, we should make the most suitable choice according to the specific situation of different airway diseases.
