Causes of eye blinking in children

Parents often bring their children to the clinic and say that they keep blinking their eyes, which is very worrying. Blinking is a non-random, temporary closing movement of the eyelids, which is a normal eyelid reflex that moistens and protects the corneal epithelium. Blinking that is significantly more frequent than this is called frequent blinking. Frequent blinking in children is a common ophthalmic disease with complex etiology, and the common causes are as follows: 1. Ocular surface abnormalities Abnormalities in the ocular surface structures are the main cause of increased blinking in children, such as: conjunctival keratopathy (conjunctivitis, conjunctival stones, superficial punctate keratitis); lid margin disease (impingement, lid gland cyst); and abnormal tear film stability. Children with refractive errors are often in a state of regulatory disorder and are prone to visual fatigue, eye itching, and dryness. This is why children with refractive errors try to change their blurred vision and visual fatigue as much as possible through frequent transients. 3, video terminal syndrome video image changes quickly, the screen flickers, coupled with children’s visual development is not sound, prolonged viewing of television can cause visual senior central balance inhibition of hyperexcitability, causing a reflex defense action, in addition, prolonged users will have different degrees of eye discomfort and visual fatigue symptoms, in children’s performance is more obvious than adults, and the main performance of frequent transients. 4, neurological disorders The transient reflex can not only detect lesions of the trigeminal nerve and facial nerve, but also detect functional disorders of the brainstem. Therefore, if the eye examination is basically normal, especially if it is accompanied by eyebrow squeezing, forehead wrinkling, nose sucking, mouth smacking, distraction, hyperactivity, poor self-control, etc., you should consult a neurologist to rule out possible neurological disorders. 5.Children’s tic disorder Children’s tic disorder is involuntary twitching of multiple muscle groups, mainly in the eye manifested as frequent blinking or involuntary blinking, in addition to the neck, shoulders, upper limbs and other parts of the twitching. Most of the children with eye discomfort and eye rubbing symptoms are either complained by parents or implied by parents. Some children may be aggravated by others’ hints, reprimands, or excessive concentration. 6. Other children who have been picky eaters and have irregular diets for a long time may have insufficient or unbalanced nutritional intake, resulting in a lack of nutrition in the body, especially vitamins and trace elements, which can cause an increase in neuromuscular stress and neurological disorders, leading to frequent blinking. In conclusion, frequent blinking in children is a common condition with a complex etiology that is influenced by various factors such as eye disorders, physiology, medications, and the environment, and should be treated by timely hospital visits.
