Is surgery necessary for granulomatous mastitis?

Q: There is a big lump in my right breast, and it hurts when I press it. The pathology result I got from the puncture is granulomatous mastitis, and the doctor told me to have surgery, but I checked the internet and the probability of recurrence is also high, so I want to ask if I must have surgery. Li Bili, Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University

A: Surgery is still necessary. Inflammatory granuloma of the breast is a disease that tends to recur and is characterized by inflammatory masses of the breast. When the lesions are relatively limited, surgical treatment is easier to achieve a cure. If the disease is longer and the lesions are more extensive, bacteria can lurk in multiple sites and form multiple lesions. For such multi-dimensional distribution of inflammatory lesions, the possibility of complete resolution with one surgery is reduced, which means that multiple surgeries may be necessary. However, it is important to remind that each time there is a reoccurrence, early surgery must be performed to ensure a complete cure.
