What are the complications of priapism in the elderly

Incomplete care or treatment of priapism in older adults may result in complications such as localized scarring or urinary tract obstruction.
Penile inflammation is usually caused by infection and localized prolonged irritation, which develops at the edge of the glans of the male penis and its lower edge at the junction of the coronal sulcus and the tethered band. Patients will experience localized redness, pain, itching, swelling of the corpus cavernosum as well as the typical symptoms of frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination.
The prognosis for most patients after the onset of priapism is relatively good, but if the elderly are not treated in time after the onset of priapism, or if they are not properly cared for after treatment, resulting in repeated localized inflammatory stimulation and infection, scarring as well as complications of urinary tract obstruction may be induced.
Therefore, it is recommended that the elderly should be treated in a timely manner when penile inflammation occurs, so as to avoid serious complications.
