What is astigmatism?

  I. What is astigmatism? In layman’s terms, the human eye is like a camera. The normal human eye can adjust its focus very well to bring external objects into focus and produce clear pictures. Astigmatism is like a lens that is not smooth and uneven, so it can not focus clearly. How to find astigmatism? Astigmatism is usually detected during kindergarten entrance physical exams or routine child health exams. Some children with high astigmatism may show side-to-side vision, squinting and head tilting. Therefore, children should routinely be screened for vision around the age of 2 to 3 years old. 3. Do children need dilated pupils? Many parents are concerned about dilating medication, but this is not necessary because children’s eyes are very strong and dilating medication only relaxes and paralyzes the adjustment muscles, and the medication wears off naturally. Dilating is a necessary measure to understand your child’s exact prescription. Fourth, with or without glasses? Simply put, as long as astigmatism affects vision and causes visual fatigue, glasses are needed.
