Traditional fundus examinations have a small field of view, are laborious and time-consuming, pose certain risks to newborns, and the examination results are hand-drawn recorded images, which are not repeatable and difficult to monitor changes in the condition. Currently, for newborn eye screening, Beijing Children’s Hospital has introduced the most modern, up-to-date and advanced international method of fundus examination for newborns —– wide field digital pediatric retinal imaging system-RetcamIII, which is an objective and non-invasive examination method with simple operation, quick detection, great field of view and high quality images. The results are reported in picture form for permanent storage and follow-up observation, facilitating early detection of fundus lesions in newborns. The method can be used not only for screening retinopathy of prematurity, but also for detecting and diagnosing other fundus diseases in children, such as fundus hemorrhage, intraocular tumors and other congenital fundus lesions.
