The startle reflex is usually most pronounced around three months after birth, after which it disappears as the central nervous system matures. If the startle reflex is observed to worsen after full term, it cannot be judged as normal for the time being and needs to be continued and if it persists after 6 months of life, the presence of a disorder such as brain damage needs to be considered.
