Lipoic acid is primarily used to treat neuropathy caused by diabetes. Lipoic acid is a B vitamin and a coenzyme of the pyruvate dehydrogenase system and the alpha-isoglutarate dehydrogenase system. In vitro tests have shown that lipoic acid reduces lipid oxidation in nerve tissue, inhibits protein glycosylation, and inhibits aldose reductase. In vivo, lipoic acid has antioxidant effects and participates in the recirculation of antioxidants such as glutathione and coenzyme Q10. Lipoic acid is mainly used for sensory abnormalities caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to lipoic acid. Diabetes mellitus with peripheral neuropathy is recommended to go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.
