After so many years as an ophthalmologist, I see many eye trauma caused by firecrackers every year. Mild eye contusions affect short-term vision or mild intraocular hemorrhage, and vision can be mostly restored gradually after the hemorrhage is absorbed, but serious eye trauma can lead to corneal injury, iris root dissection, ciliary body dissection, traumatic cataract, crystal dislocation, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, intraocular foreign body, eye rupture, and even eye removed without preservation. Even after treatment, the vision can be seriously affected, resulting in a serious decline in quality of life afterwards. Whenever I see these patients, I feel very sorry for them! What a precious eye! How many innocent people have suffered from firecrackers! Especially children suffer from such pain and will be extended for life! But the Chinese custom of fireworks means celebration, joy, and filial piety for the deceased, so it is impossible to ban them completely. But what can we ophthalmologists do for them? In addition to providing treatment we can provide people with knowledge about the possible hazards of fireworks, suggest safety measures for learning to set off firecrackers, remind parents of the safety of children playing with firecrackers, and call for a ban on the informal production or sale of fireworks that are hazardous and bursting. This year in WeChat, microblogging many of our ophthalmologists are calling for the restriction or ban on the use of fireworks, in our eyes how precious the eyes are! Of course fireworks do not only lead to eye injuries, every year the Spring Festival burn unit is also a high incidence of such patients, this year there are even reports of firecrackers impact explosion to vital organs and lead to direct death. So people should know that firecrackers are harmful! The main thing is to use safely, learn to protect themselves, and sound fireworks production and sales of firecrackers using the safety of the legal system.
